We test what actually works.

The Alchemist. is Australia's most rigorous independent functional wellness review guide. We spend weeks with every product before making a recommendation — and we never accept payment to change our rankings.

Why we built this.

The Australian functional wellness market is flooded with under-dosed, over-marketed products sold by brands whose primary expertise is copywriting. Walk into any health food store and you'll find a dozen mushroom coffee tins with names like "Focus Stack" or "Clarity Brew" — and almost none of them disclose the beta-glucan content that determines whether the mushrooms are doing anything at all.

Existing review sites — most of them US-based — take sponsored content fees, accept gifted products, and write reviews structured to avoid alienating brands they depend on for affiliate income. The result is a landscape where a product with a slick brand and a marginal formula ranks identically to a product that is genuinely effective. For a consumer trying to make a £40–80 monthly purchase decision, that's useless.

We started The Alchemist. in 2024 specifically because the Australian market was underserved. We needed a site where every product claim could be traced to a primary source, every score reflected a genuine testing protocol, and every piece of editorial copy was written by someone who had actually consumed the product for long enough to have an opinion worth trusting.

"We'd rather publish nothing than publish something we don't believe in."

Our approach

Our principles.

🚫

Independence first

We accept no sponsored content, gifted products, or brand fees. Our rankings are editorially independent. Affiliate commissions are disclosed on every page and do not influence rankings — a product that ranks first earns us commission whether we say so or not, so there is no financial incentive to inflate a score.

Extended personal use

Every product is used for a minimum of 4 weeks before we write a word. Daily notes are logged on taste, mixability, energy, and any subjective effects. We revisit scores when formulations change. A review published in 2024 that cites a changed formula will be updated or marked stale.

🔬

CoA transparency

We request Certificates of Analysis from every brand we review. No CoA? We say so clearly in the review. A product that refuses to provide documentation cannot receive a score above 65 under our rubric, regardless of personal use experience. Transparency is a non-negotiable component of the overall rating.

How it works

Our review methodology.

01 — CoA Review

Certificate of Analysis review

Before we recommend a product, we request a Certificate of Analysis from the brand. We check that the document covers identity, potency, heavy metals, pesticides, and microbial contaminants. Products that refuse to share a CoA are scored lower and flagged clearly in the review.

02 — Personal Use

4+ weeks, daily notes

Every recommended product is used daily for a minimum of 4 weeks with standardised notes covering energy, focus, sleep quality, digestion, and taste. Notes are logged in real time, not reconstructed after the fact.

03 — Price Monitoring

Real AU price, verified weekly

All pricing reflects Australian retail including GST and standard shipping. We calculate price-per-serve at the stated dose, not the minimum dose. Prices are monitored weekly and updated automatically. A product's score includes value-for-money as a weighted component — a technically excellent but overpriced product will not rank first.

04 — Sourcing Audit

Where does the mushroom actually come from?

We document sourcing claims for every extract in each product: country of origin, extraction method (water, alcohol, or dual), substrate (fruiting body vs. mycelium on grain), and concentration ratio. We contact brands directly when this information is not disclosed on packaging or website. Non-response is noted in the review.

Affiliate disclosure.

The Alchemist. participates in affiliate programmes. This means that when you click a link to a product and make a purchase, we may receive a commission from the retailer at no additional cost to you. Commissions range from 4–15% depending on the programme and product category. Every affiliate link on this site is marked with a rel="nofollow sponsored" attribute, and affiliate relationships are disclosed at the top of every review.

Affiliate commissions do not influence our rankings, scores, or editorial conclusions. Products are evaluated on a fixed rubric regardless of whether an affiliate programme exists for that product. In several categories, our top-ranked product generates zero affiliate commission because the brand does not operate an affiliate programme in Australia. We recommend it anyway. Our business model depends on reader trust, not on any single brand relationship — which is why transparency about how we make money is as important to us as transparency about how we test.
